South Korea: At least 62 people were killed and many more injured after a South Korean passenger plane carrying 181 people crashed at an airport in the southwest of the country on the morning of December 29, with the death toll expected to rise, according to South Korea’s state-run news agency.
The crash occurred at around 9 a.m. (Korean time) after the plane veered off the runway while landing at Muan International Airport, skidding off the runway and hitting a rock wall at the airport, causing a fire. The plane, a Jeju Air flight 7C2216, was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members, for a total of 181 people on board. Local authorities suspect that the landing gear of the plane failed, causing the accident. However, experts are now investigating the exact cause.
The plane that crashed was a Boeing 737-800, and Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration have not yet issued any statements. The plane was carrying 181 people, including six crew members, and was traveling from Bangkok, Thailand, to Korea. Most of the passengers were South Koreans.
